October 2004 -

The Newtown Forest Association was selected by Department of Rivers, Trails & Conservation Assistance of the National Park
Service to provide technical assistance in the form of a year-long consultation from Rivers & Trails program.  The project is titled
the Newtown Forest Association Legacy Project.    It is a new project that was conceived in order to revitalize and restructure a
longstanding organization and align its long term goals with a revised strategy.  Tim Northrop, Director, is the project contact and
person responsible for project management and implementation.  Tim also serves as the State Director for the Trust for Public
Land in Connecticut and is a resident of Newtown.

The project goal is to build upon over 75 years of land trust experience in two targeted areas: (1) developing a comprehensive,
state-of-the art stewardship and management protocol to oversee the nonprofits more than 35 properties, and (2) in conjunction
with goal #1, to significantly increase NFA’s membership through volunteer stewardship and other land trust opportunities.
Secondary goals include building awareness for the NFA throughout the town to increase visibility, membership, land donations,
and leadership.  It is anticipated that the more than 25,000 town residents will be the beneficiaries of this vital project as it is
anticipated to strengthen conservation initiatives and support on a town-wide basis, and result in more land conserved.
