August 29, 2007 - Largest Tulip Tree Prize Claimed

The Board of Directors of the Newtown Forest Association, Inc. (NFA) thanks
each and every one of those participants who turned in applications in the NFA
Largest Tulip Tree Contest.  We received many applications.  The NFA hopes
during this process each you had an opportunity to learn a little about the tulip
tree, and had time to reflect on the value that trees play in our society.  The
contest was open for applications until August 15th.

In the days leading up to the deadline we had representatives visit each of the
three largest reported trees to validate the winning applications and award the
$250 prize.

The winner of the Largest Tulip Tree Contest is Andy Drap who turned in a
Tulip Tree located at the NFA’s Hattertown Pond measuring 14’4” in
circumference.   This was followed up by a second place specimen measuring
11’5” in circumference located off of Poverty Hollow reported by Jason
Campbell.  An early submission by a Thomas Benedetto was clearly in the
running for the biggest with a circumference off of Brushy Hill, however, this
was due to multiple tree trunks grown together and was eliminated by the
judges.  Thanks to all who participated.
