August 27, 2006 - LARGEST NEWTOWN SUGAR MAPLE CONTEST FINDS A WINNER

NFA Tree Contest Winner  

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Newtown Forest Association, Inc. (NFA) we wanted to thank each and every one of those participates who
turned in applications in the NFA Largest Sugar Maple Contest.  We received over 20 applications.  The NFA hopes during this process each you had
an opportunity to learn a little about the sugar maple, the NFA and had time to reflect on the value that trees play in our society.  As many of you may
know the contest was open for applications until August 15th.  

n the days leading up to the deadline we be had representatives visit each of the three largest report trees to validate the winning applications.  

The winner of the Largest Sugar Maple Contest is Ms. Elin Hayes of 7 Bradley Lane who turned in a Sugar Maple on her property measuring 186 inches
in circumference.   About 10 years ago Ms. Hayes was told that her tree might have been the third largest Sugar Maple recorded in the state by an
unknown official.  This was followed up by a second place specimen measuring 183 inches in circumference located on a trail near the intersection of
Queen Street and Wasserman Way reported by Steve and Shauna Carmichael also of Newtown.

Actual largest measurement at 54 inches above the
ground was 15 feet 6.5 inches in circumference
which is approximately 5 feet in diameter
.
This is the winning Sugar Maple off on Bradley
Street and the NFA will be presenting to Ms.
Hayes the $250 reward.
